“How Ya Gonna Keep Them in Shul, After They’ve Tasted Freedom?”

Course Description :

In this ten-week course we will explore the Jewish responses to freedom, citizenship and the dismantling of the Ghetto offered by the French Revolution (1789) and its aftermath.  We will discuss how the Jews of Europe gained emancipation, and why this watershed moment marks the beginning of Modern Jewish History. We will examine how the Jews of the French Empire reacted to their new status.  Was it good or bad for the Jews?  (The answer is: Yes!). How did these developments affect the Jews throughout the rest of Europe? We will follow this story for over two hundred years and trace the Jewish developments that resulted from those changes, including the rise of the Reform, Orthodox, and Conservative, and Reconstructionist movements we know today.
