Together we will explore how the immigrant experience affected five acclaimed Jewish composers and filmmakers and how their Jewish, European background changed American culture.

Course Description :

Following WWII, Los Angeles and New York became home to a remarkable array of refugee talent, mostly Jewish (although not all). Together we will explore how the immigrant experience affected five acclaimed Jewish composers and filmmakers and how their Jewish, European background changed American culture.

We will discuss the musical contributions of Kurt Weill and Erich Korngold and Arnold Schoenberg. In the world of film, we will study some of the works of Billy Wilder and Fritz Lang who brought a dark, Weimer era sophistication as well as a fatalistic Jewish sensibility to the art of American cinema. We will uncover how they articulated criticism of American capitalistic  society that had been left unsaid by their contemporaries. The course will incorporate musical selections, film clips as well as other audio visual elements.
