“Turn it and turn it, for everything is in it.” — Ben Bag Bag, Pirkei Avot 5:22

Course Description:

The phrase Kol Bo means “everything is in it” — and that is exactly the spirit of this course: a little text, a little theology, a little ritual, a little mystery, and a lot of wonderfully unexpected Jewish learning.

What do a rare Torah melody, God’s daily schedule, end-of-life questions, a mysterious personal verse, and the rules of saying Shema have in common? They all open windows into the strange, rich, wise, and surprising world of Jewish tradition.

This course offers a sampler of intriguing topics from mainstream Jewish study — the kinds of ideas that make you say, “Wait, that’s actually a thing?”

  1. The Shalshelet: Trop, Cantillation, and the Music of Meaning
Explore the rare and haunting musical note called the shalshelet and discover how Torah chanting can shape meaning, mood, and interpretation.
  2. How God Spends the Day
According to the rabbis, God has a daily routine. What is on the schedule — and what might that teach us about how we should spend our own days?
  3. The Six Questions You’ll Be Asked
Jewish tradition imagines that at the end of life, each of us is asked six big questions. What are they, and what do they reveal about the life we are meant to live?
  4. Name Your Verse
Is there a verse in Tanakh that belongs especially to you? Explore the tradition of choosing a personal verse — and why some thought it might even help get you to heaven.
  5. Shema / Baruch Shem: Loud or Quiet? Sitting or Standing?
Take a closer look at one of Judaism’s best-known prayers and the surprisingly lively debates about how it is meant to be said.

Like its name suggests, Kol Bo is a course where “everything is in it” — a chance to taste the depth, delight, and surprise of Jewish learning, one fascinating topic at a time.
