What is Melton and More?

The Department of Adult Learning & Growth is a proud partner of The Florence Melton School for Adult Learning, the largest pluralistic adult Jewish education network in the world, and a project of The Hebrew University in Jerusalem. We join an international network of community-based schools providing adults the opportunity to acquire Jewish literacy in an open, pluralistic, intellectually stimulating learning environment. Together with our faculty and scholars we offer meaningful, relevant and dynamic learning experiences for the Miami-Dade community. We are pleased to offer year-round classes that nourish the soul, ignite the sprit, and nurture relationships with a community of life-long learners.

WHAT DO WE STUDY?

The Florence Melton School of Adult Jewish Learning is a text-based program that explores centuries of Jewish traditions, history, theology and ethics, in an exciting, pluralistic and thought-provoking way. The curricula were developed by renowned educators from the Melton Centre for Jewish Education at The Hebrew University of Jerusalem. This transformative learning experience provides a framework that integrates previous and future learning while also challenging students to find their voice amidst our diverse tradition.

Core Curriculum is the Melton signature program that provides adults with a comprehensive understanding of Jewish thought, practice and history. The Melton Core curriculum is a two-year adult learning program that meets weekly for 2 hours.

Rachel Wasserman Scholars Courses take students on a journey of deep examination of Jewish texts. The scholars curriculum presents classic and modern texts that have shaped Jewish perspectives for thousands of years, and invites students to lend their voices to the ageless pursue of Jewish wisdom. These courses run on a semester basis, 10-11 weeks in the Fall and Spring, for an hour and a half.

Foundations of Jewish Family Living is a an opportunity for parents to learn together and experience a a thought-provoking encounter with the core values of Judaism. At a time in a family’s life when a child is experiencing his or her own Jewish education, this rich learning experience provides parents with the learning, the language, and the confidence to be a teacher to their own children and support Jewish learning at home. The duration is determined by the organization offering the course to best meet the needs of the specific community. If you are interested in offering this course in your organixation, school and or synagogue please contact our Director of Adult Learning and Growth, Rabbi Laila Haas.

Melton & More Courses are developed by our dynamic faculty based on their expertise and passion. The courses are presented as semesters (10-11 sessions), and mini courses (4-6 weeks) throughout the year. Our faculty is comprised of scholars, professors, and community clergy who bring Jewish learning, wisdom and scholarship to life in engaging ways.

Melton "My Way" is an opportunity for individuals to create their own class by gathering a learning group around a subject of their own choosing.  Each group brings together 12-18 people from his/her own social network and chooses a topic, time, and location. The Department of Adult Learning & Growth provides an outstanding educator and ongoing administrative support to help each group thrive. If you are interseted in learning more please contact our Director of Adult Learning and Growth, Rabbi Laila Haas.

Mini-Courses take place in over the Summer. Each course is 3-6 weeks and cover a range of interesting topics developed by our faculty.

Online Courses are offered in real time which means that you will be in an online classroom with your teacher and fellow students as it is taking place. This allows for interaction and discussion, creating more opportunity to find meaning. The online courses are also recorded so that if you miss a session, you can watch the recording at a later date.
